HOW TO READ THE NEWS

STEP ONE – What is the topic you are researching. Write it down. Include the name and place/link where you first read and heard the news. Include the author, readers name and date.

STEP TWO

STEP THREE – What are the 5 core values of Journalism (watch this video first)

STEP FOUR – Get out your notepad and fill in the blanks. Time to do more research. If the news piece does not follow ALL of the above values of journalism, chances are it is propaganda. The piece is inadequate, unverified and contains anonymous sources. It is gossip. You should not spread gossip until you know more of the facts. Look up the TNI (Trusted News Initiative) to see when we lost control of real journalism and who is in charge.)

STEP FIVE – Ask yourself the questions the article does not share.

STEP SIX – It is time to share on social media. Now you have the facts and are educated to speak on it.

STEP SEVEN – Follow up. Put the dates on a calendat with links and names and be sure to hold people accountable.
